Alumni of Crescent College, Sacred Heart College and Crescent College Comprehensive have gone on to contribute in many different fields – from the arts and public service to science, sport and business.

Paddy Berkery (student 1939–47)
First captain of Old Crescent RFC and later of Lansdowne RFC, Paddy Berkery played international rugby for Ireland 11 times between 1954 and 1958.

Desmond O’Grady (student 1948–50)
Poet and academic described by Seamus Heaney as “one of the senior figures in Irish literary life”, Desmond O’Grady taught in Paris, Rome and the United States and has published numerous poetry collections, including The Road Taken: Poems 1956–1996 and The Wandering Celt.

Dan Tierney (student 1948–54)
Awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Limerick, Dan Tierney authored the 1995 Science Technology and Innovation Advisory Council report and served as chair of the National Standards Authority of Ireland from 1997 to 2007.

Sir Terry Wogan (student 1946–54)
Broadcaster and media personality, Terry Wogan became one of the best-known presenters in Ireland and Britain, hosting radio shows and his own BBC television chat show Wogan.

Professor Niall O’Higgins (student 1948–57)
Professor Niall O’Higgins was Professor and Head of Surgery at University College Dublin (St Vincent’s University Hospital) and later Professor and Chairman of Surgery at RCSI. He authored around 300 publications in surgical oncology, endocrinology and surgical training.

Desmond O’Malley (student 1946–57)
Desmond O’Malley served as a Government Minister in four different departments between 1970 and 1992 and was a founding member of the Progressive Democrats.

Louis Mulcahy (class of 1958)
Renowned ceramicist and founder of Louis Mulcahy Pottery in Clogher, Ballyferriter, Co. Kerry, he became the first craftsperson to receive an honorary doctorate from the National University of Ireland in 2004.

Ron Barry (class of 1962)
National Hunt Champion jockey in Britain in 1972/73 and 1973/74, Ron Barry won the 1973 Cheltenham Gold Cup and later worked as an inspector for the Jockey Club.

John Murray (student 1951–55; class of 1962)
John Murray served as Attorney General of Ireland in 1982 and was Chief Justice from 2004 to 2011.

Charley Harper (class of 1962)
Artist whose work is held in collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Irish Arts Council. Charley Harper is a member of Aosdána and the Royal Hibernian Academy.

Tim O’Malley
Tim O’Malley served as a TD for Limerick East from 2002 to 2007 and as Minister of State with special responsibility for Mental Health at the Department of Health and Children.

John Naughton (class of 1964)
Professor of the Public Understanding of Technology at the Open University and long-time columnist with The Observer, John Naughton is a leading commentator on media and technology.

Judge Kevin O’Higgins (class of 1964)
Appointed a judge of the European Court of First Instance in 2008, Kevin O’Higgins has served at the highest levels of the European judiciary.

Paddy Buckley (class of 1966)
Paddy Buckley has served as Executive Secretary of the Royal Irish Academy for more than twenty-six years.

Tommy Frawley (class of 1967)
Northern Ireland Assembly Ombudsman and Commissioner for Complaints, Tommy Frawley entered Crescent’s Bun Scoil at age eight before his family later moved to Belfast.

Bill Whelan (class of 1968)
Composer best known for Riverdance, for which he won a Grammy Award.

Bishop John Noonan (student 1967)
John Noonan has served as Bishop of the Diocese of Orlando, Florida, USA, since 2010.

Michael O’Sullivan SJ
Jesuit priest and director of the MA Programme in Christian Spirituality at All Hallows College, Dublin City University, Michael O’Sullivan is the author of How Roman Catholic Theology Can Transform Male Violence Against Women.

Peter Ireton (class of 1970)
Founding member and former CEO of Bóthar, an Irish humanitarian aid agency that supports families worldwide through livestock and sustainable development projects.

Noel Staunton (class of 1970)
A RADA graduate, Noel Staunton has worked with Glyndebourne and English National Opera, produced worldwide premieres of Moulin Rouge and La Bohème, directed the Sydney Harbour Bridge 75th anniversary celebrations and the Sydney Dance Company, and became Artistic Director of the Brisbane Festival.

Pat O’Sullivan (class of 1971)
Pat O’Sullivan has served as Headmaster of Rockwell College.

Joe Little (class of 1973)
Religious and Social Affairs Correspondent with RTÉ and a member of the RTÉ Authority.

Leonard Moloney SJ (class of 1973)
Jesuit priest and Headmaster of Clongowes Wood College.

Peter Walpole SJ (class of 1973)
Member of the Philippine Jesuit Province, Peter Walpole is director of the Institute of Environmental Science for Social Change at Ateneo de Manila University and executive director of the Apu Palamguwan Institute for indigenous peoples, as well as author of several ecological studies.

Major General Kevin Cotter
Kevin Cotter served as deputy Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, with responsibility for strategic HR, logistics, finance, infrastructure and legal services. He served extensively overseas with the UN, OSCE, NATO and EU in the Middle East, Balkans, Africa and Europe, and retired from the Defence Forces in 2019.

Kevin Wallace (class of 1974)
London-based theatre producer whose work includes The Lord of the Rings, Whistle Down the Wind, The Beautiful Game, Jesus Christ Superstar and Sunset Boulevard. He produced the UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar and won an International Emmy Award in 2001 as Executive Producer of the related film.

Fr Brian Kelly OSB (class of 1971)
Fr Brian Kelly made his solemn profession as a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Our Lady of Quarr, Isle of Wight, in 2005.

Darina Kneafsey (Brebeuf, class of 1977)
Chief Operations Officer at Trinity College Dublin and a member of the university’s Senior Executive Group.

Réamonn Keary (Wadding, class of 1979)
Pianist and educator who served as Chairman of Senior Examiners at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and sat on the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Cultural Relations Committee from 1997 to 2004.

Donald P. McDonald (Delaney, class of 1979)
Professor of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology at Duke University Medical Center and Director of Graduate Studies in Pharmacology there, with additional roles in Molecular Cancer Biology.

Andrew Dillon (De Chardin, class of 1980)
Dean and Louis T. Yule Professor of the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin, holding additional faculty roles in Psychology and Information Risk & Operations Management.

John Hartnett (class of 1980)
President and Founder of the Irish Technology Leadership Group (ITLG) and a member of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Northern Ireland Working Committee. Limerick Institute of Technology named the Hartnett Enterprise Acceleration Centre in his honour in 2011.

Managing Director of Microsoft European Operations.

Paul McNamara (de Britto, class of 1984)
International opera singer based in Berlin. His performance in Tannhäuser in 2009 earned him a nomination for “Singer of the Year” in Germany’s prestigious Opernwelt awards, with critics praising his range, technique and expressive power.

John Herlihy (Canisius, class of 1985)
Former Vice-President of Online Sales and Operations at Google.

Gary Kirby (Collins, class of 1985)
Noted hurler, entered on the Crescent College Roll of Honour. His achievements include ten county championships, two Munster Championships and two National League titles.

Peter Clohessy (class of 1984/1985)
Rugby player for Munster and Ireland, capped 54 times for Ireland.

Stephen Imbusch (Fielde, class of 1986)
Appointed Principal of Walpole High School in Massachusetts, USA, in 2010.

Brian Kirby (Fielde, class of 1986)
Consultant dermatologist at St Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin, and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Professor Helen Kelly Holmes (Jogues, class of 1986)
Key figure in re-establishing the Past Pupils Union and President from 1996 to 2011. She works in the School of Languages, Literature, Culture and Communication at the University of Limerick and also manages the UL Orchestra.

Helen Normoyle (Jogues, class of 1986)
Former Director of Marketing & Audiences at the BBC and member of the BBC Marketing & Audiences Board until 2012.

George Heslin (Southwell, class of 1987)
Artistic Director of Origin Theatre Company in New York; photographed with the US President at the 2011 White House St Patrick’s Day reception.

Tony O’Connor (Gonzaga, class of 1987)
World Championship rowing gold medallist in the lightweight coxless pair (with Gearóid Towey) in Lausanne in 2001, having previously won silver in 1996 and 1997. He later coached Irish rowers at the 2004 Athens Olympics and has been inducted into the Irish Rowing Hall of Fame.

John Fulham (Hayes, class of 1988)
Assistant bank manager with AIB, former European champion and Paralympic finalist in athletics.

Tommy Geary (Kimura, class of 1988)
Director of Customer Management & Operations at Eircom.

Ray Jordan (Xavier, class of 1988)
Director of Self Help, an Irish development agency delivering integrated sustainable development programmes in rural Africa; previously Emergency Coordinator for GOAL.

Jim Clarken (Berchmans, class of 1989)
Chief Executive of Oxfam Ireland.

Paul Wallace (Faber, class of 1989)
Rugby prop who played 45 times for Ireland between 1995 and 2007 and three times for the British & Irish Lions; now a television sports analyst.

Eithne Duggan (De Britto, class of 1990)
Captain of the Cork camogie team that won the All-Ireland Championship in 1998.

Gina Niland (De Britto, class of 1990)
Top Irish tennis player who won the Irish Close Championships five years in a row (1994–1998), captured almost every major domestic title and was a mainstay of the Irish Fed Cup team for twelve consecutive years. She received Tennis Ireland’s Maunsell Award in 2002.

Dermot Whelan (Castillo, class of 1991)
Comedian and broadcaster known for regular appearances on TV shows such as The Panel and The Republic of Telly.

Reena Cole (Jogues, class of 1991)
Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Limerick, specialising in blood-pressure-induced stress and strain in artery walls and thermal design of electronic systems.

Tom Comyns (Jogues, class of 1991)
Sprinter who holds the Irish junior and senior 4x100m relay records and represented Ireland at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. He holds a PhD in Sports Science.

Andrew McNamara (Canisius, class of 1992)
National Hunt jockey who won the Queen Mother Champion Chase on Newmill in 2006 and the Hennessy Gold Cup on Beef or Salmon in 2007.

Simon Carswell (Xavier, class of 1994)
Finance Correspondent with The Irish Times and author of Something Rotten: Irish Business Scandals and Anglo Republic: Inside the Bank that Broke Ireland. He received the inaugural National Newspapers of Ireland “Journalist of the Year” award in 2011.

Paul Gleeson (Xavier, class of 1994)
Adventurer who rowed across the Atlantic Ocean in 2005–2006 with Tori Holmes; they documented the 86-day voyage in Little Lady, One Man, Big Ocean – Rowing the Atlantic.

David Wallace (Carvalho, class of 1995)
Flanker who played rugby for Munster and Ireland, earning 72 international caps by November 2011.

Caitriona Jackman (Hayes, class of 1999)
Planetary scientist who completed a doctorate in astronomy and works at Imperial College London as part of the Cassini magnetometer (MAG) team, focusing on the dynamics of Saturn’s magnetosphere.

Eoin Reddan (Delaney, class of 1999)
Scrum-half who played rugby for Leinster and Ireland, earning 47 international caps by 2012.

Conor Niland
Tennis player who became the first Irishman since 1980 to reach the main draw at Wimbledon and achieved a career-high ranking of 129 in the world. At Crescent he captained the team that won the Munster Junior Tennis Championship.

Shane Leahy
Currently CEO of Oxygen8 Group and the driving force behind One4Humanity, which has delivered over $80 million in medical supplies to conflict zones including Ukraine and Gaza.
During his time at Crescent, Shane was a member of the Senior Rugby Cup winning teams in 1989 and 1990. He later played AIL rugby with Garryowen and Lansdowne, and represented Connacht, Munster and the Ireland A team.

Roisin Flinn (student 1998–2000; class of 2004)
First represented Ireland in hockey in 2007 and captained the national team in a 2009 series against Canada.

Robbie McNamara (class of 2006)
Jockey who received the Irish Examiner National Junior Sports Star Award for horse racing in 2006 and was leading jumps jockey at the 2010 Galway Festival.

Olivia Humphreys
Olivia Humphries was named Limerick Person of the Year 2024 in recognition of her work as the inventor of a life changing chemotherapy device. Her innovation has had a significant impact on patient care and treatment delivery. Read More at Limerick.ie
