Ignatian Challenge Cup Golf Competition – Donations

Our Union held the this year’s Ignatian Challenge Cup Golf competition at Limerick Golf Club on 02 September.  Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and participants we were able to raise €1700 for charity and donation to the College.  Our chosen charities this year were the North Star Project in Limerick City and the annual Pyjama Appeal of the College.  Below we have included a small piece on each donation.

NORTH STAR PROJECT

On the 9 December we made a donation of €250 to the North Star Project to support their activities in relieving the suffering of families in the Limerick Region dealing with substance abuse.

The North Star Family Support Project was established in 2010 in response to the growing need for support for families dealing with substance misuse within the family system.  Drug use was becoming more visible among youth living in the Northside of Limerick City.  During this time, there was a lot of fear in communities throughout Limerick City due to drug related gang crime.  Communities and families were divided, drug abuse was becoming more and more evident and parents had no idea how to deal with it.  Family support was very thin on the ground and some felt that what was available did not suit their needs.  The North Star Family Support Project was set up by parents and community campaigners in response to these issues.  The service went on to achieve charity status and annual funding from the HSE.  The project has grown from strength to strength over the years and moved from its base in the Northside of Limerick City to a city centre location, expanding its services to families across the Limerick Region.  For more information on the North Star Project can be found on their website:  www.northstarproject.ie

Our picture shows Chris McNamara, Chairman of the Golf Sub Committee and Past Pupil Union Committee member, handing over the donation to Mr Joe Slattery, Administrator of the North Star Project, and Kevin Cotter, President of the Crescent College Past Pupils Union.

CRESCENT COLLEGE COMPREHENSIVE SJ – PYJAMA APPEAL

Crescent College Comprehensive S.J are grateful to be supported by the Past Pupils Union in their Christmas Appeal.  For many years now the School runs a Pyjama Appeal, buying Pyjamas for all women and children in Knockalisheen Direct Provision Centre and buying jumpers and hoodies for the men.  You will have seen in the Media that thankfully the International Protection Accommodation Services moved almost 100 men from the Centre who had been sleeping in tents this week. This left a further 250 people to buy for.  The appeal was under a lot of pressure and the donation of €250 from the Union made it possible to bring the appeal over the line, yet again.

Crescent is connected with the Centre through its Community Placement programme where 5th years spend 3 days there as part of their Religion class module.

The TY students picture below are modelling the new jumpers before wrapping them for delivery.

Many thanks to all.

DONATION TO THE COLLEGE

We were happy to donate the balance of €1200 raised from the golf challenge to the College.  Our picture shows Principal Diarmuid Mullins accepting the donation from Golf Sub Committee Chairman and Union Committee Member, Chris McNamara, with Past Pupil Union President Kevin Cotter also attending.  Principal Diarmuid has plenty of ideas for how the donation can be used to best effect and he will keep us updated in the coming year.
