Crescent College Comprehensive SJ in conjunction with St Munchins are delighted to announce a new development in Limerick Rugby. This will involve the playing for the first time of a Limerick Schools Charity Cup Match between great city rivals Crescent College Comprehensive and St Munchins College. The Trophy will be called the Herbert Connealy Cup in honour of two great stalwarts of the game with two charities to benefit from all the proceeds The Peter McVerry Trust Limerick Branch and the Limerick Simon Community. The Match will take place in the iconic Markets Field on Friday December 15th with a kick off at 6.30pm.

The evening is bound to be a great occasion, because we will be making history as it is the inaugural Charity match in what we hope will be one of many. It will bring these age old rivals together so the craic and the banter off the pitch is bound to be at a premium. Crescent tradition insures we will do our talking on the pitch with our performance. The game will honour the commitment of two great rugby men in Dudley and Sean and the proceeds raised will go to two good causes the Charities nominated. The evening will be about many things but centre stage will be the teams as they continue the tradition of rugby in these two great rugby schools.

Christmas is a time for family and friends. It is a time for get togethers and what better occasion in Limerick to get together than a rugby match against our old rivals friends and sometimes foes, St.Munchins College. Any time rugby players get together the stories will flow, the old teams will fall back in together, nothing will have changed, it will be time to reminisce about those great days out in Dooradoyle or in Priory Park to talk back over the matches, the tackles made and missed, the referee who didn’t see the knock on, the tries scored and the tries missed, or even to brag about the odd bit of argy bargy, argy bargy never! So now is the time to make contact with all your school mates, boys and girls, to do a bit of networking, and maybe even a bit of business, to get out the old school tie or hat or scarf and come along to the game. After the game Crescent supporters are welcome back to Souths to celebrate the occasion.

In Crescent College during the rugby season the match we all look forward to is the local derby Crescent v St Munchins. It’s Limericks ‘El Classico’ or the Limerick ‘Merseyside Derby.’ I suppose one should call it the ‘Shannonside Derby.’ Our Past Pupils are always looking to come together to reminisce about the old days of those legendary Crescent v Munchins clashes in the past when the sky was blue and the forwards jerseys were XXL, and the backs scored the tries after the forwards had all the hard work done. So now we have joined it all together to bring everybody together to celebrate the commitment of Dudley and Sean. The match itself will be for the players, to the winners will go the Herbert Conneely Cup and the bragging rights for the remainder of the season.

Before and after will be for the supporters past and present, so come along and watch history being made as a new chapter opens in this great old rivalry.
